In an article by Forbes, companies are overcoming the War for Talent and skills shortage by seeking a new set of workers referred to as “new-collar workers.”

What is a New-Collar Worker?

Forbes indicates a new-collar worker is an individual who develops the technical and soft skills needed to work in technology jobs through nontraditional education paths. These workers do not have a four-year degree from college. Instead, the new-collar worker is trained through community colleges, vocational schools, software boot camps, technical certification programs, high school technical education and on-the job apprentices and internships.

The term new-collar worker was originated by IBM’s former CEO Ginni Rometty [Ladders]. This classification of employee evolved when faced with the challenge of hiring technical jobs, including cloud computing technicians, database managers, cybersecurity, user interface designers and other IT roles. New-collar jobs are “roles in technology that prioritize skills and capabilities over degrees or having a traditional career path.” To Rometty, the most important facet of a new-collar worker isn’t just their skills, it’s their commitment to lifelong learning. By collaborating with the community and schools and updating in-house training programs to attract job candidates, employers are finding a wealth of IT talent with the qualifications needed to fill IT jobs, thus bypassing the skills shortage gap.

Managed IT Service Providers – A Great Opportunity for IT Workers to Shine

One overlooked area of employment for IT job seekers is the growing segment of managed IT service providers. The global managed services market size is expected to grow from $243.33 billion in 2021 to $557.10 billion in 2028 at a CAGR of 12.6% in the 2021-2028 period [Fortune Business Insights]. More and more organizations are opting to use managed IT services as a fast and affordable path in accelerating digital transformation or adopting a remote workforce model. New-collar job seekers can readily put their IT skills to work as a managed IT service provider expert helping bring great experiences to customers overcoming their IT business challenges.
