/ Understanding your speed test metrics.

Download.

How quickly you can pull data from a server on the internet to your device. Most connections are designed to download much faster than they upload, as activities like loading web pages or streaming videos primarily consist of downloads.

Upload.

How quickly you send data from your device to the internet. A fast upload speed is particularly useful for sending large files, voice communication, or video-chat applications.

Jitter.

Jitter frequency measures the variability in ping over time. While jitter is not noticeable for basic tasks like reading text, it can cause interruptions in streaming video or voice, such as buffering and reduced call quality. Technically, jitter is the average deviation from the mean.

Ping (latency).

Ping is the reaction time of your connection—how quickly your device gets a response after sending out a request. A fast ping ensures a more responsive connection, which is critical for applications like voice and video communication. Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms).

Ping Reference Guidelines for Voice & Critical Traffic:

      • 0-60 ms – Solid & Responsive Connection
      • 60-130 ms – Strong Connection, remote servers may be farther away
      • 130-200 ms – Decent Connection, potentially some network saturation
      • 200+ ms – Weak Connection, voice & video quality will be poor

/ Understanding what can impact speed test results.

Time of day.

Testing network speed during business hours can lead to inconsistent results due to heavy bandwidth usage. For best results, isolate the computer performing the test or perform the test when network traffic is low.

Wireless connection.

Wireless networks are typically slower than wired connections. It is recommended to perform the test from a wired connection to ensure accuracy. Wireless speed tests may not fully reflect the network’s capabilities.

Open programs & windows.

Close other applications or browser windows before performing the test. Do not leave the browser window during the test to prevent interference with results.
